Hey anglers! Captain Ryan Carter checking in with your comprehensive weekly inshore fishing report from the southernmost paradise of Key West, Florida.
COBIA ACTION CONTINUES: We’re still finding some late-season cobia hanging around our nearshore wrecks and structure. These bronze battlers haven’t departed quite yet, offering anglers a fantastic opportunity to score one of Florida’s premier table fare species. Live pinfish, crabs, and larger soft plastic eels have all been getting solid attention from these hard-fighting fish.
WRECK FISHING DIVERSITY: The same wrecks producing cobia are absolutely loaded with toothy barracudas that provide non-stop action and acrobatic fights. The permit are schooling heavily on these structures as well, with many boats reporting multiple hookups using live crabs or larger jigs tipped with crab. When these permit decide to feed, the action can be absolutely electric!
EXPLOSIVE TOPWATER: Early morning topwater action has been nothing short of spectacular this past week. We’re seeing aggressive, heart-stopping strikes from various species including jacks, barracudas and even the occasional snook around structure. The explosion of a predator demolishing a surface plug is one of fishing’s greatest thrills.
TARPON MIGRATION IN FULL SWING: The silver kings have arrived in impressive numbers! We’re tracking multiple large schools throughout the Key West area right now as the annual migration hits its stride. These magnificent gamefish are providing bucket-list opportunities for anglers. Important tackle note: Make sure you’re equipped with heavy action setups (at least 40lb class) to efficiently land these powerful fighters without exhausting them in the warm water.
BONEFISH REMAIN CONSISTENT: The “grey ghosts” continue providing fantastic action across our flats. These speed demons are present in excellent numbers this month, with plenty of shots at fish in the 4-8 pound class. Their lightning-fast runs and technical challenges make them a favorite target for skilled anglers. Small shrimp, crabs, and well-presented flies are all producing quality catches.
Weather patterns are stabilizing as we move deeper into spring, creating ideal conditions for all of these fishing opportunities. Prime dates are filling quickly as word spreads about our exceptional bite!
Tight lines from paradise, Captain Ryan Carter
