The first cold snap of the year hit Key West this week, temporarily dropping water temperatures to their lowest point of the season. While these conditions initially slowed the bite, the quick-passing front has already allowed waters to return to more typical temperatures, setting up some excellent fishing opportunities in the backcountry basins.
The backcountry basins are currently the hot spots, offering consistent action for anglers working light spinning tackle with artificial lures. These protected waters are producing steady catches of ladyfish, speckled trout, and jack crevalle. The key has been targeting the deeper basins where these species congregate during temperature fluctuations.
Pro Tip: While drifting the mud bottoms, try this local technique – cut a fresh ladyfish in half and rig it on wire leader. This setup has been particularly effective for spinner sharks, adding an exciting dimension to your backcountry fishing adventure.
Looking ahead, as water temperatures continue to stabilize, we expect the bite to improve even further across all species. This is an excellent time to get out on the water and experience some of Key West’s diverse winter fishing opportunities.
Tight lines, Capt. Ryan Carter
