The Key West backcountry is alive with action this week. Light winds and calm seas have created perfect conditions for targeting multiple species across our diverse fishing grounds. Inshore anglers are finding success with speckled trout in the basins, using artificial lures to entice strikes. The flats are producing a mixed bag of pompano, jack crevalle, ladyfish, and blacktip sharks.
Bottom fishing remains exceptional, with grouper and snapper holding on structure. We’re seeing increasing numbers of cobia showing up around shark pods – though landing these prized fighters can be challenging with sharks in the area. Live pilchards, which we’re cast netting fresh each morning, continue to be the top producing bait for Key West inshore fishing.
